Getting started

So, there are tons of varietals and I used to consider myself a quite accomplished wine taster. I thought I'd easily be 3/4 a way to 100. Wrong. Here's the application - you're supposed to check next to each varietal you've tasted.

I'll look for it...are you on LinkedIn? You should join my Vintage Wine group, Wine Collectors Only, and Wine Review (where I started a subgroup called - Wine Cntury Club).

I had two different Torrontes - Cavas de Chacras & I think the other was Trapiche, but I can't be certain. It was the "house wine" at a restaurant at Las Lenas. The Bonarda was a 2005 "El Escondido" de Don Domenico... It was the most memorable aspect of one of the nicest dinner we had there!

I have reached 48!!! I recently tried a Grüner Veltliner, Anglianico, Bonarda, Torrontés, and Ugni Blanc. The Bonarda and Torrontés are new favorites of mine!

Yes on decanting the Tannat. The event organizer sampled it the day before and said that after 24 hours, it had settled down quite a bit. We tasted it about 8 hours after decanting, and although still tannic, it was very good. The blend we had was 80% Tannat and 20% cabernet sauvignon - a 2005 Chateau Montus.

P.S. I have a friend that is making Tannat - here in the US. His brand is Cambiata. (His Albarino is winning lots of awards!) I believe both are available for sale at AmericanWinery.com. The Tannat is very interesting, should be decanted and enjoyed with food!

I also added a wine to my list this weekend - the long talked about Friulano. It went fabulously with crab cakes! Other than that I've been a little slow. I'm now only up to 43. I do have 3-4 wines in the house, that are varietals I haven't had, so it's just a matter of taking the time to TRY them!!

One of the attendees at the event made the same comment about Tannat. They just returned from Uruguay and surrounding countries and said Tannat was very abundant there (and very cheap, too!). The hit of the day was a Cahors (malbec). Superb!

The south west part of France is good for that..it is also the source for the Tannat grape which is suppose to be good but they are losing acreage in France but its gaining popularity in South America, especially Uruguay.
